Evidence observed

Candidate described ownership of service boundaries, message retry behaviour, incident handling and the trade-offs between synchronous and asynchronous flows. They walked through a specific outage caused by duplicate message delivery and the idempotency work that followed.

The public code sample showed clear testing and error-handling patterns, disciplined use of typed boundaries, and readable commit history. It did not evidence the production migration itself.

Interpretation

The candidate appears to understand practical service decomposition and reliability concerns in a way that is difficult to acquire second-hand. Evidence suggests meaningful involvement in the migration; the exact ownership level should be tested further rather than assumed.

This is a candidate who has operated a distributed system rather than only built one, which is the harder thing to fake and the more useful thing for this role.

Concerns

  • Production ownership is not fully evidenced. Involvement is clear; final accountability is not.
  • Scale and team context need clarification. Throughput, team size and duration were described only loosely.
  • Security and compliance exposure not established. Relevant given the payments-adjacent domain.

How to close them

Three of the four gaps can be closed in a single well-aimed technical interview. See section 05.

Interview focus

  1. Hardest boundary decision. Ask them to walk through the most difficult service boundary call they made, and what they would do differently now.
  2. Failure handling. Probe how retries, dead-letter handling and observability were actually implemented, not just intended.
  3. Ownership split. Ask directly what they personally owned versus what the team delivered. Listen for specifics, not pronouns.
  4. Compliance pressure. Test how they would adapt the same architecture under tighter audit and data-residency requirements.

The remaining risk is context fit rather than capability, which your team is better placed to judge than we are.
